Penguins Strengthen Defense by Signing Young Blueliner Ilya Solovyov
The Pittsburgh Penguins have strengthened their defense by signing Ilya Solovyov, a promising young blueliner. At 25 years old, Solovyov stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 209 pounds. He joined the team just in time for their optional morning skate before facing the Calgary Flames, the team that originally drafted him in 2020.
Ilya Solovyov’s Early Career
Solovyov made his professional debut in North America during the 2021-22 season in the American Hockey League (AHL). He played for the Calgary Wranglers and made his NHL debut the following year. During his first NHL season, he played a total of 10 games with the Flames before appearing in five games the next season.
This season, Solovyov has played in 16 NHL games with the Colorado Avalanche. After facing some challenges with his lineup position, he had a conditioning stint in the AHL. He recently re-entered Colorado’s lineup and scored his first NHL goal on January 10 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Coach and Management Insights
Pittsburgh Head Coach Dan Muse praised Solovyov, highlighting his strong defensive skills. “He’s big, strong, and hard to play against,” Muse stated. “He excels at retrieving the puck and making first passes, contributing to both defensive solidity and offensive plays.”
Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas noted the team’s diligent scouting of Solovyov prior to his signing. He indicated that the Penguins are looking to add younger talent to their roster. The recent injury to Caleb Jones prompted the Penguins to act quickly in securing Solovyov.
Solovyov’s Aspirations
Beyond his defensive abilities, Solovyov considers his shot one of his greatest strengths. He aims to improve his foot speed to secure more consistent playing time. “Confidence and work ethic are key,” he remarked. “My hard work has paved the way for my opportunities, and I hope to continue building on that.”
