Jaland Lowe Departs UK Basketball Team After Injury-Plagued Season
Jaland Lowe has departed UK basketball after an injury-plagued season. The 6-foot-1 guard from Missouri City, Texas, has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
Injury and season timeline
Lowe hurt his shoulder during Kentucky’s Blue-White Game in October. The preseason injury sidelined him to start the campaign.
He returned but played in just nine games. Lowe reinjured the same shoulder several times while playing through the pain.
His final appearance came on Jan. 10 in a 92-68 win over Mississippi State. He underwent surgery soon after and is expected to receive a medical redshirt waiver.
Eligibility and transfer status
The medical redshirt would leave Lowe with two seasons of college eligibility. He entered the transfer portal ahead of the April window.
The 2026 portal opens April 7, the day after the national championship. It closes for new entrants on April 21, allowing immediate eligibility for transfers.
Background and on-court production
Lowe transferred to Kentucky last year after two seasons at Pittsburgh. He was ranked No. 36 among transfer portal players by 247Sports last spring.
At Pitt, he averaged 16.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.8 steals per game as a sophomore. He averaged 8.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in nine appearances at Kentucky.
Roster implications for Mark Pope and Kentucky
Lowe was the only true point guard on Mark Pope’s roster this past season. His decision to move on leaves a clear vacancy at the position.
Kentucky recently added four-star guard Mason Williams. Williams, a 6-2 playmaker and son of former NBA guard Mo Williams, is expected to provide depth next year.
Earlier roster moves included a high school recruit backing out and the loss of another player before last year’s portal deadline. Those prior shifts increased Lowe’s early importance to the rotation.
Wider offseason context
Lowe is the first UK player with remaining eligibility to enter the portal this offseason. More transfer decisions are expected in the coming days.
Jayden Quaintance is expected to enter the 2026 NBA draft. Ten other UK players still have eligibility beyond this season.
Other point guard movement
Several other notable point guards have already announced portal plans. Those include Oregon’s Jackson Shelstad, LSU’s Dedan Thomas Jr., and Santa Clara’s Christian Hammond.
Lowe is expected to draw interest from high-major programs. Kentucky will begin its search for a starting point guard for the 2026-27 season.
