Unemployment Rate Drops to 4.1% in Latest Report

The unemployment rate in Australia has dropped to 4.1% as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) for December. This reduction marks a significant positive shift in the labor market.

Employment Growth Highlights

In December, the number of employed individuals rose by 65,000. This growth can be attributed to both full-time and part-time job increases:

  • Full-time employment grew by 55,000.
  • Part-time employment increased by 10,000.

Youth Employment Rise

Sean Crick, head of labor statistics at ABS, noted a notable influx of younger workers. More individuals aged 15-24 found jobs, contributing significantly to the overall employment rise.

Gender Breakdown of Employment

The growth in employment was largely driven by male workers, who accounted for a 49,000 increase. Female employment saw a smaller growth of 17,000 individuals.

Participation Rate and Hours Worked

The participation rate slightly increased to 66.7%. This rise occurred despite a decrease of 30,000 in unemployment figures.

According to Mr. Crick, the total hours worked rose by 0.4%, consistent with the employment increase. Notably, December 2025 marked the first time monthly hours worked exceeded 2 billion hours, setting a new record.

This latest report underscores positive trends in Australia’s labor market, with increased employment opportunities across different demographics.
