Rangers’ Alexis Lafrenière Trade Highlights Ironic ‘Retool’ Strategy
The New York Rangers have officially embarked on a significant “retool.” This shift, confirmed by President and General Manager Chris Drury, signals a move away from trades aimed at securing a playoff spot. Instead, the team is prioritizing trades for younger talent and draft picks as they currently sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
Key Players Potentially on the Move
As part of their retooling strategy, the Rangers have expressed willingness to explore trades involving several key players:
- Artemi Panarin: The Rangers have stopped contract extension discussions. Panarin holds a no-move clause, giving him leverage regarding his potential trade destination.
- Vincent Trocheck: He is another player whose trade rumors have surfaced amid the retooling process.
- Alexis Lafrenière: The former first-overall pick has also come into focus. NHL insider David Pagnotta suggested the Rangers might consider substantial trade offers for him.
The Ironic Situation of Alexis Lafrenière
Alexis Lafrenière’s potential departure from the Rangers adds irony to the team’s retooling strategy. Selected first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, Lafrenière was expected to lead the franchise into a new era alongside teammate Kaapo Kakko. However, both players have struggled to meet expectations, with Kakko being traded to the Seattle Kraken last season.
During the 2023-24 season, Lafrenière showed promise, scoring 28 goals and adding 29 assists for 57 points. This performance led to a seven-year, $52.15 million contract extension. Unfortunately, his production declined in the following season, yielding only 45 points.
Recent Challenges and Future Prospects
This season has not started any better for Lafrenière, although he did impress with a three-point performance at the Winter Classic against the Florida Panthers. Nevertheless, frustrations have mounted following critical mistakes, including a costly miss against the Buffalo Sabres. Subsequently, he has been demoted to the third line by head coach Mike Sullivan.
Given that Lafrenière demonstrated potential to be a near-60 point player, some believe a change in scenery could be beneficial for his career. As the trade deadline approaches on March 6, the Rangers are actively exploring offers. The next few weeks may prove pivotal for both the team and Lafrenière’s future in the NHL.
