Thousands of Pilgrims Flock to Higüey for Día de la Altagracia
Thousands of pilgrims are gathering in Higüey to celebrate the Día de la Altagracia. This annual event attracts visitors from various towns across the country and abroad. The festivities center around the Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia, a significant site for Dominicans.
Operativo Altagraciano 2026
In preparation for the celebrations, the Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE) launched the Operativo Altagraciano 2026. This initiative involves over 9,121 collaborators and volunteers working together, alongside local authorities and the La Altagracia Governor’s Office.
Religious Events and Festivities
The local bishop, Monsignor Jesús Castro Marte, announced that all arrangements are in place for the celebrations. The day will feature a special mass at 9:00 AM, attended by notable figures including President Luis Abinader and First Lady Raquel Arbaje. This event is significant as it honors the Virgin of Altagracia, the mother protector of the Dominican people.
Safety Measures and Emergency Support
Efforts to ensure public safety during the event have been emphasized. COE Director Juan Manuel Méndez García reported a traffic prevention initiative commenced at 2:00 PM on the eve of the celebrations. The plan aims to manage potential incidents and facilitate smooth travel for attendees.
- Ambulances: 113 ambulances will be stationed at strategic locations.
- First Aid Posts: 153 first aid stations will be operational in the region.
- Emergency Facilities: Two Red Cross field hospitals will be set up near the Basilica.
Historical Significance
The Vía Sacra, a historical path running from the Basilica to the San Dionicio Church, plays a crucial role during the festivities. It symbolizes the spiritual journey many pilgrims undertake to honor the Virgin of Altagracia.
Emergency Response and Support
A mobile command center and operational base will be established by COE in coordination with the Emergency Services Directorate. Additionally, the Minister of Defense, Lieutenant General Carlos Antonio Fernández Onofre, has allocated a helicopter for aerial support during the event.
The event underscores the importance of safety and preparedness, urging attendees to drive carefully. The celebrations reflect the rich cultural heritage tied to the Virgen de la Altagracia, as thousands come together to share in this cherished tradition.
