Appointed governor on the recommendation of then-Premier Bob Carr, Bashir was succeeded by David Hurley. Premier Minns noted her desire to step down after 14 years, opting not to surpass Sir Roden Cutler as the longest-serving governor.

Her contributions were recognized with her appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988, followed by her elevation to Dame of the Order in June 2014.
