Tri-State Shelters Operate Nonstop Amid Harsh Cold Wave

As freezing temperatures grip the Tri-State area, shelters are operating nonstop to provide vital assistance to those in need. The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky and City Gospel Mission are among the key facilities adjusting their services to respond to the severe weather conditions.

Tri-State Shelters Mobilize During Cold Wave

Daniel Minera, who oversees City Gospel Mission, reported an increase in demand for food and shelter. He noted that many individuals arrive seeking a warm place to stay and a meal. “We have a lot of folks who are just knocking on the door,” Minera stated, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Key Services Offered

  • City Gospel Mission accommodates 76 individuals, providing both shelter and meals.
  • The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky has 68 beds, with additional seating available.

Minera emphasized the importance of preparation, ensuring that their kitchen is stocked with adequate supplies. This preparation is vital, given that many individuals may not have other options during the harsh weather.

Personal Accounts from Shelter Guests

Guests at these shelters express deep gratitude for the support they receive. “It’s been a blessing because if it wasn’t for this place, I would be out there somewhere,” shared one guest named Darrick, who highlighted the threats posed by the cold.

Commitment to Service

Both shelters prioritize not turning anyone away. Kim Webb from the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky mentioned that they started planning for the extreme weather last Thursday. “No one should be outside in this deadly weather,” Webb affirmed, as their facility manages to accommodate more guests despite being at full capacity.

Future Preparedness

Minera added that the shelters are closely monitoring the weather forecast. They aim to accommodate as many individuals as possible, and when necessary, coordinate transport to other facilities with available capacity.

Amid the severe cold wave, the dedication shown by shelters across the Tri-State underscores an essential community response to ensure that vulnerable populations receive the refuge they need during this critical time.
