Bryson DeChambeau Skips PGA Tour 2023, Uncertain About LIV After 2026
Bryson DeChambeau’s LIV Golf Commitment
While Koepka plans to rejoin the PGA Tour following four seasons with LIV, DeChambeau remains uncertain. He stated, “I’ve got a contract this year, and that’s just going to be an ever-evolving conversation.” DeChambeau emphasized the importance of a mutual understanding with LIV, saying, “Hopefully, I’m back next year. I’m excited for the potential of LIV.”
DeChambeau aims to honor his commitments, particularly to his teammates on the Crushers team. This team-oriented commitment contrasts with Koepka’s more individualistic return to the PGA Tour.
Brooks Koepka’s Return and Its Implications
In announcing his PGA Tour intentions, Koepka re-applied for membership as the Tour began its Returning Member Program. This program offers a one-time opportunity for major winners, like DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, and Cameron Smith, to return. However, this comes with significant penalties, including:
- $5 million charitable donation
- Loss of FedExCup bonus money for the year
- Five-year ban from receiving equity grants from the new for-profit PGA Tour entity
PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp highlighted that Koepka could lose potential earnings between $50 million to $85 million due to these penalties. DeChambeau remarked on the weight of Koepka’s decision, acknowledging that everyone has different priorities.
Future Prospects for DeChambeau and Others
During the same event, Rahm confirmed his intention to remain with LIV, stating, “I’m not planning on going anywhere.” Cameron Smith also expressed a long-term vision with LIV. In contrast, DeChambeau’s future with LIV is more ambiguous.
On social media, DeChambeau shared a photo implying uncertainty, standing next to a sign that read “exit.” While he recognized the value of his franchise and teammates, he acknowledged that many external factors influence his decisions. “It’s really dependent on other people’s decisions at this point,” he stated.
Performance and Future Contracts
DeChambeau has consistently performed well in LIV, finishing in the top eight for three seasons, including a third-place finish last year. He holds three wins and a spot on the last year’s U.S. Ryder Cup team.
He previously revealed plans to negotiate a contract extension with LIV, which is currently set through 2026. “It’s confidential,” he noted. “We have to get to a place where both parties have a good understanding of one another.”
As DeChambeau navigates his commitments and future within the world of professional golf, only time will tell where his career path leads.
