Ronnie O’Sullivan Shifts Strategy to Pursue Eighth World Snooker Title

Ronnie O’Sullivan, 50, begins his bid for a record eighth Crucible title on Tuesday. He meets China’s He Guoqiang in the opening round. The match is live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

Recent form and results

This will be O’Sullivan’s 34th straight World Championship appearance. It is also his first UK event of the season.

He won his last ranking title at the World Grand Prix in January 2024. O’Sullivan has otherwise played only sporadically in the 2025/26 season.

In China last month he compiled a 153 break, the highest recorded in professional snooker. He then lost 10-7 to Thepchaiya Un-Nooh in the World Open final.

At Goffs in Ireland he beat seven-time champion Stephen Hendry 6-1 in the John Virgo Trophy semi-final. He followed that with a whitewash of John Higgins.

New approach to preparation

O’Sullivan says he has altered his preparation this year. He now limits continuous practice to avoid boredom.

He works in short stints, then steps away to preserve enjoyment of the sport. He hopes to find form and produce one or two strong results.

He was criticised after missing the official media day, a point raised by Shaun Murphy. O’Sullivan explained his reasons publicly ahead of the tournament.

Pressure and past performances

The five-time world champion has 23 Triple Crown titles to his name. Last year he reached the semi-finals and lost to eventual winner Zhao Xintong.

O’Sullivan warns that preparation alone does not guarantee success. Handling big-stage pressure, he says, separates winners from others.

Expert views and expectations

Former professionals believe he remains a major contender. Alan McManus and Jimmy White expect a strong showing at the Crucible.

Reanne Evans praised his China form and confidence. Analysts pointed to his recent wins and high break as evidence he is in good shape.

Many observers note that Ronnie O’Sullivan shifts strategy this season to pursue an eighth World Snooker title.
