21-Year-Old Driver Banned for BMW Crash, Exceeding Drink-Drive Limit

Adam Wade, a 21-year-old driver from Seaview, appeared at Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court on April 17.

He pleaded guilty to one count of drink driving after a February collision in St Helens.

Crash details

The collision happened on February 9 at the junction of Embankment Road and Latimer Road.

Wade’s BMW 3 Series 320i M Sport was heavily damaged and later written off.

Airbags deployed and debris lay across the carriageway after the BMW crash.

Officers at the scene found Wade slurring his speech and removed him to hospital.

He told police he tried to swing around the corner but went too far left.

A blood sample measured 147mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood.

This result meant he was exceeding the drink-drive limit, at almost twice the legal level.

Court hearing and sentence

Prosecutor Serena Edwards outlined the evidence to the bench.

Defence counsel Michael McGoldrick entered Wade’s guilty plea and offered mitigation.

Magistrates were told Wade had no previous convictions.

They also heard he had been drinking with friends before making the short journey home.

Mr McGoldrick said Wade had “lost his good name” and now faced a criminal record.

The defence warned the driving ban could cost Wade his apprenticeship.

Magistrates disqualified the 21-year-old driver from driving for 19 months.

They ordered him to pay a total of £697 in fine, surcharge and court costs.

The crashed BMW was written off, leaving Wade owing his parents about £8,000.
