Nuggets’ Peyton Watson, Spencer Jones: Game 1 Status Against Timberwolves

The Denver Nuggets entered the first-round series with the Minnesota Timberwolves hopeful for healthier depth. Coach David Adelman said he expects Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones to have a chance to play in Game 1 on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Both players remained un-cleared as of Wednesday.

Injury updates

Watson and Jones took part in practice Wednesday at Ball Arena. The session was non-contact.

Both wings are managing right hamstring issues. Watson re-aggravated a strain first suffered in early February. Jones developed hamstring tightness in early April and missed the final six regular-season games.

Team outlook and timing

Adelman stressed the value of extra recovery days. He said more time improves their chances to return and prepares them mentally for the matchup.

If cleared, they would provide Denver with important perimeter defense off the bench. Their availability could affect rotations and matchup plans for the series opener.

Matchup with Anthony Edwards

The Wolves are led by All-NBA guard Anthony Edwards. Nikola Jokic described Edwards as a difficult offensive assignment due to his speed, finishing ability, and shot-making.

Christian Braun is slated to start on Edwards. Adelman sees Watson and Jones as key reinforcements to help contain Minnesota’s ball-handling threats.

Edwards’ condition

Edwards missed time late in the season with a right knee issue. He said in Minneapolis this week he has focused on lowering body fat and regaining game shape. He listed his weight at 218 pounds, the lightest since college.

Series history and context

This marks the third playoff meeting between these clubs in four years. Adelman emphasized the teams are not the same as prior matchups.

He pointed to roster turnover and personnel changes. Players from past series, including Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Russell Westbrook and others, are no longer factors in this matchup.

Nuggets’ Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones remain central to Denver’s Game 1 status against the Timberwolves. The team will wait on final medical clearances before the weekend tip-off.
