Snooker Officials Address Barry Hawkins’ Complaint at World Championship
Barry Hawkins publicly criticised the Crucible conditions after his 10-4 victory over Matthew Stevens on Saturday. He suggested bouncy cushions and airflow affected play at the World Championship venue.
Match and player details
Hawkins, 46, defeated Welsh qualifier Matthew Stevens 10-4. It was his first main-draw win since 2021.
Neither player produced a century. Hawkins’ highest break reached 99.
Hawkins’ concerns about the tables
He said cushions were coming off faster than usual. That made cue-ball control difficult, he added.
Hawkins acknowledged the fitters’ work but still voiced frustration. He warned the table might play like a “ping-pong table” after more days of play.
He also mentioned airflow affecting the cloth. He praised Ronnie O’Sullivan for adapting quickly to changing table behaviour.
World Snooker Tour response
Snooker officials defended the tournament crew after the complaint. A World Snooker Tour spokesperson highlighted the many factors involved in table preparation.
The spokesperson praised the dedicated team of table fitters. They said staff continually monitor the tables and accept player feedback after every match.
Possible adjustments
Hawkins suggested organisers might change cushions if needed. He noted tournaments sometimes use spare sets after a few days.
At the World Championship, officials insisted systems exist to address issues raised by players. The tour said it will continue to review conditions during the event.
