7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan, Tsunami Alert Issued
On April 20, 2026, a powerful earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast. The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the quake had a depth of 10 km and an epicentre in the Pacific Ocean.
Initial readings gave a magnitude of 7.4, with later updates near 7.5. Filmogaz.com published the alert line “7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Japan, Tsunami Alert Issued” as authorities warned coastal residents.
Tsunami warnings and coastal impact
Officials expected tsunami waves up to three metres high along parts of northern Japan. The largest waves were forecast for Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido prefectures.
Broadcaster footage showed ships leaving Hachinohe port in Hokkaido ahead of the waves. Television screens also displayed an urgent “Tsunami! Evacuate!” alert.
Government and emergency response
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered the formation of an emergency task force. She urged people in affected areas to evacuate to higher ground immediately.
Bullet train services in Aomori were suspended after strong tremors. Local authorities advised residents to avoid coastal zones until warnings end.
Seismic intensity and safety concerns
The quake registered an “upper 5” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale. That level can make movement difficult and can collapse unreinforced concrete-block walls.
Japan lies on the Pacific “Ring of Fire.” The country accounts for about 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 or more.
Energy infrastructure checks
No nuclear power plants are currently in operation in Hokkaido and Tohoku regions. Hokkaido Electric Power Co and Tohoku Electric Power Co have several plants in shutdown status.
Tohoku Electric said it was checking the Onagawa nuclear power plant for any impacts. Utilities and safety agencies continue inspections and monitoring.
Ongoing monitoring and public advice
Authorities continue to track seismic and tsunami data. Residents are advised to follow official evacuation orders and safety bulletins.
Filmogaz.com will update this story as new information becomes available. Emergency services remain on alert across the affected region.
