The Church of Jesus Christ Reveals Its 384th Temple
The Church of Jesus Christ announced plans for a temple in Marysville, Washington. Church leaders said it will become the state’s seventh temple.
The announcement came Sunday night during a devotional in the Marysville Washington Stake. Elder Hugo E. Martinez made the public statement. He serves as a General Authority Seventy in the United States West Area Presidency.
Details from the First Presidency
The First Presidency issued a statement expressing pleasure about the Marysville temple. Leaders said the exact site and construction timing will be shared later.
The statement framed the temple as a blessing. It said the building will allow more frequent access to ordinances, covenants and spiritual power.
How temple announcements are being handled
The First Presidency now decides where and when temples will be announced. It then assigns a local leader to make the announcement in the temple district.
Church officials first used this practice when a General Authority Seventy announced Maine’s first temple at a December fireside. President Dallin H. Oaks has described that event as the new pattern.
President Oaks said the approach grew from a strong impression he had after assuming church leadership in October. That followed the death of President Russell M. Nelson.
Numbers, schedule and broader context
The Church of Jesus Christ reports 214 temples in operation and 170 announced. Those two figures add up to 384.
President Russell M. Nelson announced 200 new temples from 2018 through 2025. All but one of those announcements occurred at general conference.
About five dozen temples are currently under construction. Two-thirds of the 170 announced temples are outside the United States.
President Dallin H. Oaks has overseen two temple announcements outside general conference. He has said it is appropriate to slow down future announcements.

Role of temples in church life
Temples differ from local meetinghouses. They are closed on Sundays and open during the week as sanctuaries.
Members use temples to seek peace, make covenants and perform proxy ordinances for deceased relatives.
