Collin Morikawa Faces Intense Injury Scare with Courage
Collin Morikawa is competing at the RBC Heritage while managing a recent back injury. He returned a week after the Masters and about a month after withdrawing from THE PLAYERS.
Early-season setback
Morikawa injured his lower back during a practice swing at TPC Sawgrass. He grabbed his back on the second hole and withdrew from the tournament.
He missed three weeks of competition following the injury.
Return at Augusta
At the Masters, Morikawa rallied through the weekend. He played 11-under over his final three rounds and tied for seventh.
Performance at Harbour Town
At Harbour Town Golf Links he posted a 67 in round one. His opening 67 was four under and bogey-free.
He followed with a 68 and finished four under over his final nine holes on Friday. After round one he said he was swinging at roughly half speed.
He added that his body felt slightly better but trust remained an issue. Only 36 holes remained at the RBC when he made those remarks.
Injury management and outlook
Morikawa has battled back trouble for about three years. He traced the problems to gym work rather than on-course play.
He said he wanted to protect his back more during the six-week stretch ahead. That schedule includes three signature events and two majors.
Mindset and goals
Morikawa admitted he lacked trust in his body and felt scared to play. He said the Masters felt like a mini-win and provided confidence for upcoming weeks.
