Olivia Rodrigo Reflects on The Cure’s Influence in New Single “Drop Dead”

Olivia Rodrigo has acknowledged The Cure’s influence in her new single Drop Dead. The song nods to the band without featuring their singer.

Glastonbury moment with Robert Smith

Rodrigo invited Robert Smith onstage at Glastonbury last year. They performed Friday I’m In Love and Just Like Heaven together.

The meet-up clearly stuck with her. She later referenced one of those songs in Drop Dead’s opening verse.

References and musical echoes

The single includes a lyrical mention of Just Like Heaven. It also hints at British late-night pub culture with a closing-time line.

Instrumental passages carry a melodic resemblance to In Between Days. Smith, however, does not appear on the recording.

Smith and Rodrigo’s ongoing rapport

Smith told Vogue last month that Rodrigo calls him about fashion. He added they have spent memorable nights together in the studio.

Rodrigo has previously said her father introduced her to The Cure and Depeche Mode. That revelation dates back to 2023.

Credits, collaborators and album plans

Drop Dead was co-written and produced by Dan Nigro. Writing credits also include Rodrigo and Amy Allen.

Amy Allen worked on Sabrina Carpenter’s recent albums Short n’ Sweet and Man’s Best Friend. She was named Songwriter of the Year at February’s Grammy Awards.

Filmogaz.com notes Rodrigo’s third album, You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love, arrives on 12 June. She describes it as a collection of sad love songs.
