NRL Explores Investment Opportunities in Super League
NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo flew to the United Kingdom this week for face-to-face talks about possible investment in the Super League. He described recent conversations as productive. He stressed the goal is partnership, not a takeover.
Why the talks are happening
The NRL wants rugby league to grow globally. Abdo said stronger northern competition would benefit the sport worldwide. He pointed to fan moments such as the Ashes tour and crowds in Las Vegas.
Governance and the commission model
Abdo explained the Australian Rugby League Commission model. It has eight independent directors and is chaired by Peter V’Landys. The NRL believes independent decision-making helps long-term growth.
He said the commission idea is under consideration in the UK. The NRL is listening and learning. The governance landscape in Britain is more complex.
How any deal might work
Abdo said discussions are about partnership, not a formal offer. The focus is on growing revenues and reinvesting in clubs. He highlighted the need for sustainable clubs and a competitive salary cap.
He expects a resolution, if agreed, over weeks or months rather than years. Many mechanics remain to be worked through. Owner control and governance are among the topics being examined.
Responses from UK stakeholders
Rhodri Jones, managing director of RL Commercial, described meetings with Abdo as positive. He confirmed no formal offer has been received. He added there are red lines to resolve.
Jones said the NRL would like influence over any commission appointments. He also noted the RFL, Super League and RL Commercial create a complex governance mix. Other interested parties exist and must be considered too.
Wakefield Trinity owner Matt Ellis has also commented publicly on the proposals via The Bench podcast. Stakeholders continue to weigh the options.
Broadcasting and visibility
Sky Sports will again show every Super League game live in 2026. Two matches per round will be shown exclusively live. The other five matches will air on Sky Sports+.
