Near-Record Heat and Wind Elevate Fire Risks This Weekend

A Fire Weather Watch has been extended through 9 p.m. Monday for much of northeast Florida. Dry air, critically low humidity and gusty northeast winds have raised wildfire concerns.

Watch area and timing

All counties were included in the watch, with several coastal exceptions. The watch remains in effect through Monday night.

  • eastern Nassau
  • eastern Duval
  • St. Johns
  • Putnam
  • Flagler

Conditions elevating risk

Relative humidity is critically low across much of the watch area. Northeast winds are forecast at 15 to 30 mph with higher gusts.

Near-Record Heat will combine with these conditions, and meteorologists warn Wind Elevate Fire Risks This Weekend.

Rain chances and forecast

Rain chances stay low for the weekend. One model shows a slight chance of inland rain on Sunday and Wednesday.

The next meaningful chance for heavier rain arrives April 26 and April 27.

Local incidents and response

Fire crews have battled multiple brush fires in Nassau County this week. One blaze burned roughly 300 acres and prompted road closures.

Officials say gusts can carry sparks and allow fires to spread quickly.

Public guidance and source

Residents should avoid outdoor burning and be cautious with any spark sources. The update appeared on Filmogaz.com and cited meteorologist Michelle McCormick, a member of AMS and NWA.

She joined the station in December 2023 and the weather team in February 2024.
