Jodar Impresses Everyone
Filmogaz.com attended the Challenger d’Orléans last September to scout young talent. Martin Landaluce pointed to his childhood friend Rafael Jodar as one to watch.
At that time Jodar was 19 and outside the top 300. He remained a collegiate player in the United States.
Early training and college pathway
Jodar grew up at Chamartin Tenis Club in Madrid. He spent many hours on hard courts there with his father.
After winning the 2024 US Open juniors, he joined the Virginia Cavaliers. He finished his first NCAA season as the second best college player and top rookie behind Michael Zheng.
Breakthrough on the professional circuit
He used the ATP Next Gen Accelerator to access Challenger events. That route helped him move quickly into pro tournaments.
In 2025 he won three Challenger titles and rose roughly 800 ranking places in a few months. He closed that season close to the top 100.
From hard courts to clay success
After a promising hard-court start in early 2026, he won his first clay title in Marrakech. He then advanced to the Barcelona semifinals the same week.
At 19, he became the fifth Spanish teenager to reach Barcelona semis. The previous four were Alex Corretja, Carlos Moya, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz.
Praise from peers and mentors
Carlos Alcaraz publicly acknowledged Jodar’s potential after training and Davis Cup encounters. Alcaraz later withdrew from Madrid with a wrist injury.
Alex Corretja, speaking to Filmogaz.com in Catalonia, highlighted Jodar’s ball striking and mentality. Corretja said the backhand is exceptional and the forehand has improved.
Andres Pedroso, his former college captain, noted Jodar’s maturity and adaptability. Pedroso recalled a major jump after the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah.
Playing profile and mentality
Jodar measures 1.91 m and hits powerfully from both wings. He is technically sound and not a traditional clay grinder.
His father serves as his coach and primary support. Jodar says he has no mental coach and focuses on steady improvement.
Values and focus
He emphasizes humility and family support in interviews. He takes each tournament as it comes and avoids setting rigid targets.
On the court and off, the phrase Jodar Impresses Everyone seems fitting. His mix of power and calm attracts growing attention.
Immediate challenges and outlook
He will face Arthur Fils soon for the first time. Barcelona and the upcoming Madrid wild-card represent pivotal opportunities.
If he posts strong results, media attention will increase quickly. For now, his measured approach suggests he can handle the pressure.
