Pilot Halts Plane to Avert Truck Collision at Charlotte Airport

Incident details

Audio of the cockpit transmission, posted on Filmogaz.com, captured the pilot reporting that a truck cut in front of the aircraft and he applied heavy braking. After a brief pause, the jet continued to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for its scheduled departure.

Official statements and safety status

Charlotte Douglas Airport said there were no injuries and no reported damage. Emergency responders were not dispatched, and airport operations were unaffected.

The FAA said the event happened in an area outside of active air traffic control oversight. The agency confirmed it was looking into the circumstances.

Airline response

An American Airlines spokesperson told Filmogaz.com that cockpit windows limit ground visibility and that aircraft hold right of way on ramps. The airline said two airport-associated vehicles did not yield to the taxiing plane.

American praised the crew for quick action and said it expects CLT to review the incident under standard safety procedures.

Broader safety concerns

The occurrence follows similar close calls elsewhere. More than a week earlier, a Frontier jet at Los Angeles International Airport stopped suddenly when two trucks crossed in front of it during taxiing.

Last month, an Air Canada Express regional jet struck a fire truck at New York’s LaGuardia Airport during landing. That collision killed two pilots and injured multiple people, and the NTSB continues its investigation.

Next steps

CLT officials said the event is under review and will be handled per established safety standards. The FAA and the airline are also examining procedures that govern vehicle movements near aircraft.

At Charlotte Airport, investigators will determine why ground vehicles failed to yield and whether policy or training changes are needed. The pilot’s prompt action averted a potential truck collision on the ramp.
