Severe Storms and Heavy Rain Threaten on First Alert Weather Day

A major storm system will move into the region Friday evening. Meteorologists have declared Friday a First Alert Weather Day.

Severe storms, heavy rain and strong winds threaten the area during this alert. Forecasters warn of multiple hazards across the region.

Timing and primary hazards

Storms are expected to arrive around 4 p.m. The most intense threat should diminish by 11 p.m.

  • Damaging winds that may down tree limbs and cause power outages.
  • Large hail capable of damaging vehicles and property.
  • Isolated tornadoes, with a higher risk over central Wisconsin.
  • Heavy rainfall that could trigger flash flooding and widen river flooding.

Conditions before the storms

Dense fog is reducing visibility across the region this morning. The fog should lift by late morning.

Skies otherwise turn mostly sunny with morning readings in the mid 40s to around 50. A strong south wind will develop, with gusts up to 30 mph.

High temperatures will vary widely, from the 50s near the lakeshore to the upper 70s inland.

Weekend outlook

Relief arrives Saturday as temperatures cool and winds remain breezy. Expect partly cloudy skies with a noticeable drop in readings.

Saturday highs will be near 49 with a low around 31. Sunday stays cool and breezy, with a high near 45 and a chance of sprinkles in the afternoon.

Most of the weekend should remain dry, which will be beneficial after recent rains.

Early next week

Monday brings gradual warming with filtered sun and increasing south breezes. Inland highs should reach the low to mid 50s.

Tuesday looks mostly sunny and warmer, with highs climbing into the 60s and near 70. Lakeside areas will remain cooler, generally in the 50s.

Overall, much of next week appears comfortable and mostly dry.

Wind and wave forecast
