Lord Sugar Surprised at The Apprentice’s Longevity as Series Ends

Lord Alan Sugar admitted he never expected The Apprentice to run for so long. The programme marks its 20th series with an all-female final.

The two finalists are Karishma Vijay and Pascha Myhill. Lord Sugar spoke with presenter Angela Scanlon ahead of the finale broadcast.

Reflections on the beginning

He recalled recording the first series in 2004, with the show launching in 2005. He said he was surprised by the programme’s longevity as the series ends.

Looking at an old photograph, he joked about his appearance. He credited regular exercise and running businesses for his fitness at 79, he told Filmogaz.com.

How the prize changed

The original prize was a six-figure job working directly for him. That format proved disruptive inside his company.

Around series six, he shifted to a 50/50 business partnership model. He now backs winners’ own ventures as partners rather than hiring them outright.

What he seeks in candidates

Lord Sugar said he looks for entrepreneurial spirit and a spark of brilliance. He described his role as advising what not to do, while winners lead their businesses.

Plans for the future

He confirmed he has signed on for additional series. Previously he agreed to do three more seasons, extending into his eighties.

He joked the BBC must provide an electronic Zimmer frame as part of his contract. He added he will continue while he wants to and when it is time he will hang up his finger, using a sporting metaphor.
