Boston Man, 28, Charged in Alleged Assault on Transit Police Officers
A Boston man, 28, was arraigned Monday in Roxbury Municipal Court on multiple counts. He pleaded not guilty, court records show.
Charges and custody
Prosecutors charged Fritznel Jean with mayhem and several counts of assault and battery on an officer. One count alleges assault causing serious bodily injury.
He was ordered held on $100 cash bail. Bail in a prior Quincy case was revoked for 60 days.
What happened at Transit police headquarters
The incident occurred about 8:20 a.m. Friday at MBTA Transit Police headquarters. Officers were processing Jean before a Quincy court appearance related to an alleged shoplifting case.
Jean had been arrested the night before. Officials say he demanded to be released when an officer opened his cell door.
Authorities allege Jean lunged at the first officer. He jumped onto the officer’s back and bit the back of his head.
Other officers moved to intervene. Prosecutors say Jean then began gouging the officer’s eyes and pressed his thumbs into the eye sockets.
He also allegedly attempted to bite a second officer’s hand before being restrained. Paramedics were called to evaluate the injured officers.
Injuries and response
The first officer suffered significant facial trauma. Doctors recorded severe bruising, burst blood vessels in both eyes, and a cut below one eye that required two stitches.
Suffolk District Attorney Kevin R. Hayden described the episode as an extraordinary burst of violence. He praised officers for restraining the defendant and wished the wounded officer a quick recovery.
Next steps in court
Jean faces several felony charges and remains in custody. His next hearing in the attack case is set for May 12.
