Melendez Promoted as Young Hits Injured List

The New York Mets made three roster moves Thursday that reshaped their bench and bullpen. Utilityman Jared Young was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to April 13.

Young sidelined with knee injury

Young suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee. The injury prompted the roster change and a temporary exit from the active lineup.

He had been a reliable option early in the season. Young went 7-for-20 with two doubles and two RBIs in limited duty.

Usage and recent absence

Young started four games at first base and two in left field. He has been out of the lineup since Sunday’s series finale against the Athletics.

Through 23 plate appearances, Young struck out three times and drew two walks. The team announced the move with the IL designation retroactive to April 13.

Melendez recalled to take roster spot

Outfielder MJ Melendez was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Young’s spot. Melendez was promoted to the majors as Young hit the injured list.

In Syracuse, Melendez posted a .216/.286/.431 line across 56 plate appearances. He added two homers, three doubles and a triple during that span.

Position flexibility and background

Melendez has primarily played the corner outfield positions this season. He did appear at first base twice for Team Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.

He rose in prospect rankings after a massive 2021 campaign. That year he hit 41 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A.

Major league track record and outlook

From 2022 through 2024 with Kansas City, Melendez totaled 51 homers. He posted about a .700 OPS across 1,587 plate appearances in that period.

Melendez is seeking a rebound after a difficult 2025 season. He spent most of last year in Triple-A and enters this call-up aiming to regain form.

García released after brief tenure

Right-hander Luis García was designated for assignment on Monday and has now been released. The 39-year-old’s stint in Flushing was short-lived.

García allowed five earned runs and 11 hits over 6 1/3 innings with the Mets. The club decided to part ways after that performance.

Filmogaz.com will follow further roster updates as the Mets adjust to Young’s injury and Melendez’s return. Fans can expect lineup changes while the club evaluates next steps.
