Concachampions Quarterfinals: Second Leg Results Revealed
The knockout phase of the Concachampions quarterfinals produced several shocks across the two legs. Key second-leg results revealed which MLS clubs advanced and which Liga MX sides were eliminated.
América edged out by Nashville
On April 14, América fell 0-1 at the Estadio Azteca. Hany Mukhtar scored the decisive goal in the 51st minute.
The tie ended 0-1 on aggregate after a 0-0 first leg. Nashville’s goalkeeper Brian Schwake made nine saves to frustrate the hosts.
Cruz Azul fight but go out to LAFC
Cruz Azul drew 1-1 with LAFC in Puebla on April 14. Gabriel Fernández converted a penalty in the 18th minute.
LAFC had won the first leg 3-0, so the Californian side advanced 4-1 on aggregate. A late penalty at 90+7, converted by Denis Bouanga, sealed LAFC’s place in the semis.
Cruz Azul dominated possession with 72 percent. They registered 10 shots on target, all denied by Hugo Lloris. Gonzalo Piovi was sent off at 90+2.
Toluca and Tigres complete the Mexican picture
On April 15, Toluca sealed their tie with a strong away performance. Paulinho netted a hat-trick to help Toluca win the series 4-2 on aggregate against LA Galaxy.
Tigres also advanced. They beat Seattle Sounders across the two legs to win 2-0 on aggregate. Both Mexican teams will shift focus to the semifinals now.
