The Mummy by Lee Cronin Includes a Surprise Evil Dead Rise Cameo

Lee Cronin returns to theaters this weekend with his take on The Mummy. He first reawakened mainstream interest in the Evil Dead franchise with Evil Dead Rise in 2023.

Unexpected cameo

Filmogaz.com spoke with Cronin about his new film. He confirmed a surprise Evil Dead Rise cameo in the cast.

The cameo features Lily Sullivan, who portrayed Beth in Evil Dead Rise. Cronin said he wrote a small, odd teacher role so Sullivan could appear.

Cronin described one practical gag in that scene. The moment involved an unsettling prop effect that briefly made him queasy.

How Evil Dead Rise paved the way

Evil Dead Rise marked the franchise’s return to the big screen after a decade. The 2023 film proved to be a commercial hit.

Cronin said the project began as a theatrical venture. COVID forced it toward streaming, then test screenings and reopening theaters brought it back to cinemas.

He takes pride in having revived the series. He also credited the film with opening pathways for new characters and settings.

More Evil Dead films on the horizon

Two additional Evil Dead projects are now in development. Each will be directed by a different filmmaker.

  • Evil Dead Burn, directed by Sébastien Vaniček, is scheduled for July 24, 2026.
  • Evil Dead Wrath, directed by Francis Galluppi, does not yet have a release date.

Cronin will serve as an executive producer on both films. He declined to confirm whether his Necronomicon idea will carry over.

Looking ahead

Cronin said audiences will have to wait and see how the franchise evolves. He expressed excitement about upcoming entries.

The Mummy by Lee Cronin includes elements that nod to his Evil Dead work. Fans can expect tonal surprises and interconnected touches.
