Overnight Storms Spawn Two EF-1 Tornadoes in Southeast Michigan
The National Weather Service confirmed two EF-1 tornadoes struck parts of Washtenaw and Wayne counties during the pre-dawn hours of April 15, 2026. Overnight storms produced significant wind damage across southeast Michigan. No deaths or injuries were reported.
Ann Arbor tornado
The stronger twister formed at 1:44 a.m. near Jackson Avenue and I‑94. It tracked southeast through Veterans Memorial Park and nearby neighborhoods.
The vortex lifted at 1:46 a.m. near West William Street and Fourth Street. The NWS estimated peak winds at 110 mph.
Damage in Ann Arbor
- Path roughly 1.7 miles in length.
- Maximum width near 500 yards.
- Many trees uprooted or snapped.
- Large limbs and stadium light poles were broken.
- Portions of an elementary school roof were ripped off.
- Nearby straight-line winds damaged roof panels at Yost Ice Arena.
Allen Park–Lincoln Park tornado
The second tornado touched down at 2:14 a.m. along the Allen Park and Lincoln Park border. It was on the ground for about two minutes.
Initial touchdown occurred near Wall Avenue close to Ruth Avenue. The tornado moved east-southeast and crossed Dix Highway into Melvindale.
Damage in Wayne County
- Peak winds estimated at 95 mph.
- Path length about one-third of a mile.
- Maximum width near 200 yards.
- Minor roof and shingle damage at first, then EF-1 intensity.
- Snapped trees and damage to homes and businesses.
- Windows, roofs, and HVAC units suffered impacts.
