Cinco de Mayo Parade Celebrates on May 2

Lorain will mark Cinco de Mayo with a community parade on May 2. The event celebrates Mexican heritage and community unity.

Parade schedule and route

Participants may line up at 12:30 p.m. at the south end of Oakwood Park. The staging area sits on East 36th Street.

The parade will step off at 2 p.m. It will travel along city side streets to the Mexican Mutual Society on East 28th Street.

A reception at the Mexican Mutual Society will follow the procession. Attendees can expect music, food and family-friendly entertainment.

Organizers say this year’s procession includes a larger turnout. The lineup features a semi tractor, many classic cars and local groups.

Event organizer Martin Leibas is once again leading the parade. He helped restart the tradition in early 2025 after a five-year pandemic hiatus.

Leibas said the goal is to educate younger generations about Mexican culture. He often coordinates planning with the Mexican Mutual Society.

A queen’s contest will accompany the celebration for a select group of young girls. Contestants were announced ahead of the event.

A fundraiser launched on Patronicity supports parade costs. The campaign runs under the Community Foundation of Lorain County and Main Street Lorain.

Organizers sought $2,000 and raised $5,500 from 16 donations. Contributions were accepted through April 24 to support event expenses.
