Sharon Osbourne Joins Tommy Robinson’s London March
Sharon Osbourne has said she will attend a march in central London organised by the far-right figure Tommy Robinson on May 16. The announcement came after a social media video by the organiser set out plans for a large rally.
Details of the planned rally
Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is staging the event under the Unite the Kingdom banner. He previously led an anti-immigration gathering at Trafalgar Square in September that drew more than 100,000 people.
The May 16 event will take place at the same central London location. A video shared on Instagram by GauciReports included several of Robinson’s calls to action.
Messages from the organiser
In the clip, Robinson said, “May 16th is the date that Britain rises” and called it “the date that the world hears our roar.” He added that his supporters had “had enough of migration, enough of mass immigration.”
Robinson made inflammatory remarks about people arriving from Afghanistan on small boats, and said he planned to “bring London to a standstill.” He also declared, “They have tried to silence us for decades, but we will be silenced no more.”
Osbourne’s response and recent political comments
Osbourne replied to Robinson’s speech on social media with the words, “See you at the march.” She returned to the UK recently after living in the United States for decades.
Earlier this year she told Billboard on the Grammys red carpet that she was “seriously thinking about running for mayor of Birmingham.” In February, she posted that she was “gonna move to Birmingham and put my name down for the ballot to be on the council.”
Trigger for local ambitions
Those comments followed news that Shahid Butt, a candidate with a past conviction, planned to stand as an independent. Butt was convicted of a terror offence in 1999.
Amid the controversy, he told the BBC: “I’ve always maintained from day one, that these were false, fabricated charges that were put against me, I was tortured into signing a confession.”
Context
The planned demonstration and Osbourne’s stated attendance are set to attract significant attention. The event follows a large September rally and features rhetoric likely to prompt public debate.
