Finchley Arson Attempt Sparks Investigation

Detectives have opened an inquiry after an attempted arson at a synagogue in Finchley. Two masked men approached the building shortly after midnight.

The men threw two bottles and a brick at the synagogue. Officers say the bottles are suspected to have contained petrol.

Incident details

The attack occurred on Fallow Court Avenue in Finchley. It took place shortly after 00:00hrs on Wednesday, 15 April.

Both suspects wore dark clothing and balaclavas. Neither bottle ignited and no damage was reported.

Investigation and policing

The matter was reported to police by staff at 08:30hrs. No injuries were sustained.

Detectives from the Met’s North West Command Unit are leading enquiries. They are supported by specialist officers from Counter Terrorism Policing London.

Officers describe their work as urgent and ongoing. No arrests have been made at this early stage.

The Finchley arson attempt has sparked increased patrols. Residents will notice a heightened police presence in the coming days.

Senior officers are meeting synagogue leaders and local community representatives. They stress they are treating the act as an antisemitic hate crime.
