Police identify man who entered the River Tyne from the Redheugh Bridge in Gateshead shortly before 10pm on Friday, 10 April. The force confirmed the man’s identity as 39-year-old Dean Larvin, a local resident.
Incident and identity
Officers were called after reports that a man had entered the water from the bridge. Initial accounts suggested an altercation involving a group nearby.
Enquiries later established the man left the scene after the dispute. He then entered the river a short time later.
Search and investigation
Northumbria Police say extensive enquiries are under way. The Major Investigation Team is leading the probe into this bridge water incident.
Detective Inspector Ash Loader said search activity is ongoing. He added there is no set timescale for locating Mr Larvin.
Arrest and family support
A 48-year-old woman was arrested as part of early inquiries. She has been released on police bail while enquiries continue.
Officers are supporting Mr Larvin’s family during the ongoing investigation. Agencies and colleagues are assisting with the search.
Appeal to witnesses
Police are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward. They particularly seek dashcam footage of the moments around the incident.
