Cat Deeley Fights Tears on ‘This Morning’ as Bereaved Mother Shares Loss

On ITV’s This Morning, Cat Deeley fought back tears as a bereaved mother shared the loss of her daughter. The interview also featured presenter Ben Shephard and focused on alleged domestic abuse and its consequences.

The victim and the timeline

The daughter was 23 years old. Her mother, Sharon Holland, said she never met the partner in person.

Sharon said she first spoke with him by phone in May 2022. She described incidents of physical violence during the relationship.

Attempts, hospitalisation and outcome

Sharon told the programme her daughter attended police stations before her death. There were two bridge incidents recorded earlier.

On the final day, the daughter attempted suicide earlier and then died later that night. She was treated in hospital for 33 days.

Medical staff moved her to palliative care, where she remained for nine days. A consultant had assessed her survival chances at about 5% after the initial days.

Criminal proceedings and sentence

The daughter’s partner received a 41-month sentence. The conviction was for controlling and coercive behaviour.

Sharon described that sentence as “absolutely disgusting.” She is campaigning to link coercive control with suicide in public policy.

Official reaction and legal context

The Ministry of Justice has stated that victims are receiving stronger protections. The law now aims to treat coercive behaviour on par with physical violence.

The Crown Prosecution Service said it recognises the link between domestic abuse and suicide. It said prosecutors now work earlier with police and agencies.

The CPS added that it encourages consideration of murder or manslaughter in suicide cases where domestic abuse or controlling behaviour is known.

Campaign aims and public response

Sharon hopes legal changes and awareness will increase sentencing for coercive control. She says lessons have arisen from her daughter’s death.

She told the show these developments give her some hope. She added that her daughter did not die in vain.
