Polish Athlete Achieves Historic World Championship Debut
Polish cue sports are making a mark on the global stage. Three Polish professionals now compete internationally: Mateusz Baranowski, Antoni Kowalski and Michał Szubarczyk.
Qualifying battles in Sheffield
The World Championship qualifying rounds took place near the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. All three Poles entered the elimination stages for a place at the Crucible.
Baranowski exited in the second round. He failed to progress further in the qualifiers.
Kowalski secures Crucible spot
Antoni Kowalski began his campaign from the second round as the highest-ranked Pole. He defeated Englishman Connor Benzey 10-1 in a dominant opening win.
In the next match, Kowalski overcame Joe O’Connor 10-8. That victory put him into the final qualifying round.
Decisive match against Jamie Jones
The winner-takes-all tie against Wales’ Jamie Jones carried big consequences. Only a win would keep Kowalski among the professional ranks and make history for Poland.
Kowalski opened 2-0 but Jones levelled the score. The Polish player then won three successive frames, including a recovery from a 37-point deficit.
Jones answered with a near-century break before the mid-session saw the pair separated by a single frame. In the evening session, Kowalski produced a 51-point break to draw level again.
The momentum shifted in Kowalski’s favour as he ran to a 9-6 lead. He compiled an 84 break in the 15th frame to underline his control.
Jones fought back to 9-8, but Kowalski closed the match in the next frame. The final score was 10-8 in Kowalski’s favour.
With that result, a Polish athlete achieves a historic World Championship debut at the Crucible. Kowalski will become the first Pole to appear in the tournament proper.
Szubarczyk’s milestone and Vafaei’s progress
Fifteen-year-old Michał Szubarczyk registered a notable achievement earlier in the qualifiers. He became the youngest player to record a win in the World Championship qualifying stages.
Szubarczyk’s run ended when he met Iranian Hossein Vafaei in the third round. Vafaei then advanced and later beat China’s Yang Gao 10-4 to secure his own place in the Championship.
Not all qualifying matches have concluded. Several spots still await final confirmation as the event moves toward the Crucible phase.
Filmogaz.com will continue to follow Polish players’ progress at the World Championship. More updates will appear as qualifiers finish and the main draw forms.
