South Shields Dominate Radcliffe in Title Pursuit

South Shields produced a commanding 5-2 win over Radcliffe at the Neuven Stadium. The visitors were left chasing from early on.

Match report

The Mariners struck inside four minutes. Paul Blackett benefited from a loose ball after an initial stop by Mateusz Hewelt to open the scoring.

Blackett doubled the lead soon after. He latched onto a through ball and finished calmly into the bottom corner.

Radcliffe threatened in the 12th minute. Rio Clegg set up Danny Greenfield, whose volley was blocked on the line to keep the score at 2-0.

Shortly after, Sean McGurk forced a fierce effort that hit the post. The goalkeeper then recovered to gather the rebound.

Radcliffe halved the deficit on 33 minutes. Jon Taylor carried the ball from midfield and slipped it to veteran David Ball, who curled home into the top-right corner.

South Shields reasserted control early in the second half. A slick move involving McGurk and Oliver Bainbridge created space for a left-back, who finished confidently to restore a two-goal cushion.

Seven minutes later, McGurk’s attempted cross took a deflection off Rick Smith. The deflection wrong-footed the keeper and crept into the net for a fourth.

The hosts then moved 5-1 clear after a well-worked sequence on the edge of the area. Bainbridge, Blackett and Will Jenkins combined, and Jenkins finished with a composed run and strike.

Radcliffe grabbed a late reply before stoppage time. Tyler James was denied in a one-on-one, but Jude Oyibo sparked a counter and found Rio Clegg. Clegg rounded the keeper and slotted into an empty net.

The referee blew for full time after four minutes of added time. The result confirmed an emphatic victory for South Shields.
