Live Nation Set to Manage Weston-super-Mare’s Tropicana Venue
Live Nation has been named the preferred operator for Weston-super-Mare’s historic Tropicana. The appointment is subject to approval at a North Somerset Council meeting on Tuesday, 21 April. If agreed, the operator would sign a 25-year management deal following a major refurbishment.
Refurbishment and reopening plans
The council expects the renovated Tropicana to reopen in 2028. The upgraded venue will host a variety of events. It will have capacity for up to 10,000 people.
Funding for the project
North Somerset Council is using £20 million from the UK government to deliver the works. An extra £2.7 million comes from the Cultural Development Fund. That funding was awarded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and delivered by Arts Council England.
About Live Nation
Live Nation is headquartered in Los Angeles and was formed by a 2010 merger with Ticketmaster. The company promotes concerts, runs Ticketmaster ticket sales, manages venues, and supports artists. It stages more than 20,000 shows each year for over 2,000 artists and operates in more than 40 countries.
Local response and significance
Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member for culture, community services and safety, described the decision as a major moment. He said the council was pleased to name Live Nation as its preferred operator. He highlighted the company’s international experience.
History of the Tropicana
The seafront Tropicana first opened in 1937. It hosted famous acts and visitors, including appearances by Laurel and Hardy. The building fell into disrepair and closed as a swimming pool in 2000 after years of financial losses.
The site briefly reopened in 2015 as part of Banksy’s Dismaland project. The council plans wider town centre and seafront improvements alongside the Tropicana. Projects include Birnbeck Pier, Grove Park, Marine Lake, and several high street shop refurbishments.
