Virginia Tech’s Neoklis Avdalas Joins UNC Men’s Basketball Team

Neoklis Avdalas has reportedly committed to the University of North Carolina. He entered the transfer portal and chose coach Michael Malone and UNC on Monday.

Player background

Avdalas is a 6-foot-9 guard from Athens, Greece. He played professionally in the Greek HEBA A1 league in 2023-24 and 2024-25, averaging 7.7 points per game.

He represented Greece at the FIBA U20 EuroBasket Tournament in 2025. In 2025 he opened recruitment to American colleges and earned a No. 2 international newcomer ranking from 247Sports.

Season at Virginia Tech

Avdalas spent his first college season at Virginia Tech. He started all 31 games for the Hokies in 2025-26.

He averaged 12.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game. That mark placed him eighth in the ACC in assists per game.

Notable performances and honors

Avdalas was one of five ACC players with multiple 30-point games. He earned ACC Rookie of the Week twice during the season.

On Nov. 10 he was named Co-Player of the Week alongside UNC’s Caleb Wilson. The award followed a 33-point outing that included five rebounds and six assists in an overtime win over Providence.

In that Providence game he shot 5-of-8 from three. His season three-point percentage finished at 31.4 percent.

In Virginia Tech’s 89-82 loss at Chapel Hill on Feb. 28, Avdalas led the Hokies with 19 points. He also added five assists and three rebounds and hit 3-of-6 from long range.

What the move means for UNC

This commitment makes Avdalas the first player to join UNC out of the transfer portal in the 2026 cycle. His size and playmaking should add versatility to Michael Malone’s roster.

Neoklis Avdalas brings international experience and scoring upside. Filmogaz.com will monitor how he fits into the UNC men’s basketball team rotation.
