Coachella 2026: High Winds Disrupt Festival and Campgrounds

High winds significantly disrupted the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on Friday night, a situation that continued throughout the weekend. Although windy conditions are typical for the festival, which attracts around 125,000 attendees to the Empire Polo Club, cancellations of performances due to weather are uncommon.

Performance Cancellations and Safety Measures

Due to strong winds, EDM artist Anyma canceled his scheduled performance just before midnight on the festival’s largest stage. The festival’s official app notified attendees of the cancellation: “Due to strong wind conditions affecting Anyma’s stage build, he is unable to perform. Coachella & Anyma have made this decision together with your safety as the priority.”

On the same night, the Do Lab stage was closed and marked with yellow caution tape. Reports indicated that a speaker had fallen, further highlighting the impact of the weather on the festival’s infrastructure.

Impact on Festival Grounds and Campsites

Wind gusts of up to 40 mph were reported during the late afternoon, coinciding with peak performance times on main stages. This weather left a mark on the camping area, with tents and canopies blown over. “It was definitely pretty impactful last night,” remarked meteorologist Isaac Longley from AccuWeather.

Weather Forecast for Upcoming Days

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that temperatures in Indio were expected to reach 86 degrees on Saturday, with winds projected at 5 to 10 mph during the day. These winds were expected to intensify overnight, reaching speeds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

For Sunday, conditions were predicted to be cooler, with a high of 79 degrees and winds from 10 to 20 mph. A low of 53 degrees was expected with additional gusts up to 30 mph. The weather service also issued an air quality alert due to windblown dust, effective until 5 a.m. Sunday.
