Ricciardo Thanks Red Bull for Making His F1 Exit Decision

Daniel Ricciardo said he was grateful after Red Bull decided to end his Formula 1 career. He made the remarks during an interview on DRIVE with Jim Farley.

Early career and rise

Ricciardo progressed through the Red Bull driver pathway, starting at HRT and moving to Toro Rosso in 2012. He joined the senior Red Bull squad in 2014 and collected seven Grand Prix victories with the team.

He then spent 2019 and 2020 with Renault. In 2021 he moved to McLaren and raced there through 2022.

Setbacks, releases and return

Ricciardo struggled to match team mate Lando Norris at McLaren. The team replaced him with Oscar Piastri at the end of 2022.

He returned to Red Bull as a reserve driver. Midway through 2023 he rejoined the grid with AlphaTauri, standing in for Nyck de Vries.

A practice crash at Zandvoort fractured his hand and kept him out for around ten weeks. Liam Lawson deputised for five Grands Prix during that spell.

Final season and figures

Ricciardo retained a seat into 2024 but was replaced after the Singapore Grand Prix. Liam Lawson took the opportunity for the remainder of the season.

In 2024 he managed three top‑10 finishes from 18 races, while team mate Yuki Tsunoda recorded seven. Across his career Ricciardo achieved eight Grand Prix wins and 257 starts.

Reflection on the ending

He said being let go twice in recent years left him exhausted and reflective. Ricciardo thanked Red Bull for making the call that helped him accept the end of his F1 run.

He admitted he had lost some of the spark that once drove him. He noted how a handful of drivers remain highly competitive into their 40s.

Next steps

After leaving Formula 1 he became a Global Ambassador for Ford Racing. That role was confirmed in September last year.
