XChat Debuts Soon on iPhone and iPad
The platform now rebranded as X is set to unveil a new messaging application named XChat. This standalone app aims to broaden the platform’s capabilities by offering end-to-end encryption, a no-ad environment, and no user tracking, per a recent announcement from Apple.
XChat Features and Capabilities
XChat promises several innovative features beyond standard text messaging:
- Audio and video calling
- Document sharing
- Creation of group chats
- Ability to edit or delete sent messages
According to Apple’s press release, the user interface is designed to be minimalistic, focusing on “active chats in a private, focused space built for conversation.” This suggests that XChat will prioritize user experience while ensuring privacy.
Privacy Concerns
Despite the emphasis on privacy and encryption, some users have expressed doubts regarding the app’s privacy policy. Critics are questioning how an app that promotes user privacy can simultaneously collect significant personal information, such as location data, contacts, and search history.
Market Context
Elon Musk, the owner of X, has recently criticized WhatsApp’s privacy measures, which further adds to the ongoing debate about digital privacy. However, XChat will be exclusively available to existing X account holders and will launch on iPhone and iPad devices only. Notably, this excludes Android users from the rollout.
With established messaging platforms like Signal and WhatsApp not requiring separate accounts, XChat faces a challenge in drawing users away from these competitors. The app is expected to launch on April 17, allowing time for users to evaluate its appeal.
