Gallup Report: Gen Z’s Disapproval of AI on the Rise

Recent findings from a Gallup survey indicate a notable rise in disapproval of artificial intelligence among Generation Z. The study, conducted in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, reveals critical insights into young people’s attitudes toward AI.

Key Findings from the Gallup Report

According to the survey, negativity surrounding AI has grown significantly over the past year. Here are some of the primary results:

  • 31% of respondents reported feeling angry about AI, up from 22% last year.
  • Excitement for the technology has decreased as only 22% express excitement, down from 36% the previous year.
  • 83% of Gen Z adults believe AI will complicate learning.
  • K-12 students share similar concerns, with 74% foreseeing difficulties in learning due to AI.

A Growing Skepticism Towards AI

The Gallup survey, conducted between late February and early March, engaged over 1,500 participants aged 14 to 29. It highlights a slowing adoption of AI in this demographic. Just 51% reported using AI services weekly, representing a modest increase of only 4 percentage points from the previous year.

Furthermore, despite recognizing the importance of AI skills for college readiness, skepticism persists. Less than half of respondents (46%) now believe AI tools enhance learning speed, a decrease from 53% last year.

Concerns About AI’s Impact on the Workplace

Worries about AI extend beyond academics. Nearly 48% of surveyed individuals express that the risks of AI in professional settings outweigh its benefits, a significant rise from 37% the prior year. This mounting anxiety indicates a broader reevaluation of AI’s role in society.

Stephanie Marken, a senior partner at Gallup, notes that rather than outright rejection, Generation Z is carefully reassessing AI’s integration into their lives. The data reflects a demographic increasingly aware of AI’s potential drawbacks regarding trust and career readiness.

Higher Education Implications

These concerns are echoed within the higher education landscape. Faculty at California State University are urging the cancellation of a $17 million contract with OpenAI. They argue that the ChatGPT Edu version fails to provide accurate information and may detrimentally affect teaching methods.

A petition opposing the contract has amassed over 3,400 signatures, demonstrating the collective unease among educators regarding AI’s influence on the learning process.

Overall, the Gallup survey sheds light on Generation Z’s evolving views of artificial intelligence, highlighting a growing disapproval that educators and technology developers should consider in future innovations.
