Suspect Arrested for Alleged Molotov Cocktail Attack on Sam Altman’s Home
In the early hours of Friday, a suspect was arrested for allegedly launching a Molotov cocktail attack on the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. San Francisco police confirmed the incident, which also involved threats made outside the company’s headquarters.
Details of the Incident
The attack occurred around 3:45 AM PT. An unidentified individual approached Altman’s residence and threw an incendiary device toward the property. Fortunately, the device did not ignite, causing only minimal damage and no injuries.
Shortly after the attempted attack, individuals matching the suspect’s description were reported to have made threatening statements near OpenAI’s office, located in the Mission Bay neighborhood of San Francisco. OpenAI’s corporate security quickly notified staff about the incidents.
Security Measures Implemented
- Employees were informed of the increased police presence in and around the office.
- Staff were advised against allowing anyone to tailgate into the building.
OpenAI’s security team expressed gratitude for the rapid response of the San Francisco Police Department. They confirmed that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement as investigations continue.
Context of Recent Threats
This incident adds to a troubling trend of threats against OpenAI’s operations. In November of the previous year, the company faced a lockdown after similar threats were made by an activist. Additionally, in February 2025, protests led to the arrest of demonstrators who blocked access to the office.
OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood emphasized the importance of employee safety in light of these events. “We deeply appreciate the swift action of SFPD and the support from the city,” she said.
