Toronto Gas Prices Drop Overnight, Analyst Predicts High Costs Until June
Toronto residents experienced a significant decrease in gas prices, seeing a drop of 13 cents as of Friday morning. This reduction comes as relief to many, but analysts warn that persistent high costs are expected due to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Future Predictions for Gas Prices in Toronto
Roger McKnight, the chief petroleum analyst at En-Pro International Inc., offered insights into the future of gas prices. He indicated that it might take until June for the situation to stabilize, assuming ideal conditions. “This is not a perfect world,” McKnight emphasized during an interview with CTV News.
Impact of the U.S.-Iran Ceasefire
The recent drop in prices can be traced back to a 14-day ceasefire announced between the U.S. and Iran. This development was critical as it allowed for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital commercial waterway historically responsible for transporting 20% of the world’s oil.
- Ceasefire Announcement: Tuesday
- Location: Strait of Hormuz
- Daily Ship Traffic Before Conflict: Over 100 ships
- Ships Passing After Ceasefire: 12 ships
Despite the ceasefire, tensions remain high, with Iran closing the strait in response to military actions against Lebanon. McKnight described the ceasefire as “fragile,” highlighting the uncertainty of the situation.
Current Oil Prices and Projections
The price of Brent crude oil, which sets international benchmarks, rose to $97 on Friday. This marks a notable 30% increase since the onset of the conflict in late February.
Looking forward, McKnight suggested that even if a peace agreement is reached, it would take time for global oil prices to stabilize. He noted that significant damage to the refining infrastructure in the Persian Gulf would complicate recovery efforts.
Expected Changes in Gas Prices
Gas prices in Toronto are projected to drop by an additional cent overnight. However, diesel prices are expected to rise by four cents. This increase affects not only drivers but also consumers, as diesel fuels the trucks responsible for transporting food across the region.
- Expected Gas Price Drop: 1 cent
- Expected Diesel Price Increase: 4 cents
McKnight underscored the importance of diesel, stating, “While gasoline grabs the headlines, diesel is crucial for the economy.” He pointed out that while individuals can reduce gasoline consumption, the demand for food transportation remains constant, thus tying the economic impact directly to diesel prices.
