Phantom Blade Zero Dismisses Generative AI Technology

Phantom Blade Zero, a Wuxia-inspired action game, is nearing its release. Developer S-Game is finalizing its preparations and has addressed its position on generative AI technology. CEO Qiwei Liang, known as ‘Soulframe’, stated that every element in the game is created by skilled artists, emphasizing the importance of preserving creative intent.

Commitment to Human Artistry in Game Development

In a recent statement on social media, Liang affirmed the studio’s commitment to exclusively using human talent. He stated, “We will not use AI visual tech that could alter our artists’ original creative intent.” This promise applies to all facets of the game, including:

  • Character Models: Based on 3D scans of real actors.
  • Voice Acting: Performed in both Chinese and English, featuring full lip-syncing.
  • Weapons: Forged by expert swordsmiths for authentic motion capture.

Attention to Detail and Authenticity

S-Game demonstrates a strong focus on authenticity. The development team has explored numerous breathtaking locations across China. They visited:

  • Ancestral Halls in Fujian
  • Ancient Towns in Zhejiang
  • Old Steel Factories in Beijing

These locations have been scanned and creatively combined, resulting in what the studio describes as a unique visual style termed “Kungfupunk.” The game maps are hand-drawn using traditional Chinese brushes and rice paper by talented artists from the Central Academy of Fine Arts.

Final Development Stages and Launch Date

With the development process nearing completion, S-Game is pouring resources into refining the game to ensure it meets high standards. Phantom Blade Zero is scheduled for release on September 9th, targeting both PS5 and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Stance Against Generative AI Technology

The gaming industry is increasingly encountering discussions about generative AI technology. S-Game’s outspoken resistance to its use distinguishes them from many contemporaries. Liang concluded with a strong belief that “human artistry is not merely a means for creating value; it is the value itself.” S-Game is dedicated to building a passionate team that produces a game they can all take pride in.
