Oahu Storm Threat Closes Non-Essential City and State Offices Friday
Oahu is bracing for severe weather as heavy rain and strong winds loom. Consequently, non-essential state and city offices will close on Friday, April 10. This proactive measure aims to mitigate risks associated with potential flooding, hazardous travel, and power outages.
Governance Response to Oahu Storm Threat
Governor Josh Green has confirmed the shutdown of all non-essential state departments. Employees not involved in disaster preparedness will be granted administrative leave. “The safety of our residents and families must come first,” stated Green, emphasizing the need for families to prioritize safety and preparedness.
The City and County of Honolulu is also implementing similar closures. Mayor Rick Blangiardi noted the step is taken out of caution. He urged residents to minimize travel and prepare for possible deteriorating conditions.
Closure Details
The following closures are in effect on Oahu:
- All state offices
- Hawaii State Judiciary
- University of Hawaii campuses
- Public schools and charter schools
Additionally, Friday’s court hearings and trials will be rescheduled. Filings originally due on that day have been extended to Monday, April 13, weather permitting.
Suspended Public Services
Various public facilities will temporarily close, affecting several services, including:
- Driver Licensing Centers
- Satellite City Halls
- Municipal golf courses
- Honolulu Zoo
- Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve
- Honolulu Botanical Gardens
- Parks and recreational facilities (excluding designated shelters)
The state Legislature will continue its operations despite the closures, as mandated by statutory obligations.
Emergency Shelters and Safety Precautions
Emergency shelters will be accessible for residents and visitors needing refuge. Notably, these shelters are pet-friendly. People seeking shelter are advised to bring essential items such as food, water, medications, and pet supplies. Locations include:
- Wahiawā District Park
- Mānoa Valley District Park
- Waiʻanae District Park
- Kāneʻohe District Park
- Kahuku Elementary School
- Nānākuli High and Intermediate School
Residents should also be prepared for transportation disruptions. Possible road closures, traffic signal outages, and transit delays may occur. While Skyline services are expected to run, TheBus and Handi-Van could be suspended if conditions worsen. During outages, treat non-functioning traffic signals as four-way stops.
