Former Sen. Ben Sasse Candidly Discusses His Terminal Cancer Diagnosis

Former U.S. Senator Ben Sasse openly discussed his terminal cancer diagnosis in a recent interview. After representing Nebraska for eight years, Sasse revealed that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer in December. He described this diagnosis as a “death sentence.”

Diagnosis and Health Challenges

In an interview with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, Sasse shared details about his health journey. He initially sought medical attention due to persistent back and abdominal pain, mistakenly attributing it to his intense triathlon training. Following a full-body scan, doctors discovered that his body was “chock-full of tumors.”

In addition to Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, Sasse was also diagnosed with lymphoma, vascular cancer, lung cancer, and severe liver cancer shortly after his initial diagnosis. He reflected on the harsh reality of facing terminal illness, stating, “Death is terrible. We should never sugarcoat it.”

Family Impact

Sasse, a father of three, expressed that the prospect of leaving his children behind is the most challenging part of his situation. He voiced concern for his youngest child, who is 14, saying he worries about not being there during pivotal moments in their lives.

Efforts to Improve Quality of Life

Despite a prognosis of “three or four months to live,” Sasse remains committed to making the most of his time. He stated, “We’re all on the clock, and I wanted to have prioritized better.” To extend his life, he is undergoing treatment with an experimental drug called daraxonrasib. He reported a 76% decrease in tumor volume since starting the treatment, although adverse side effects have included skin issues and bleeding.

In describing his experience, he said, “Cancer sucks. But I’m pretty grateful that cancer is a stake against my delusional self-idolatry.” Sasse continues to work and host his podcast, “Not Dead Yet,” which reflects his lighthearted approach to his diagnosis, drawing inspiration from a Monty Python joke.

Reflections on Mortality

As he navigates the emotional burden of his diagnosis, Sasse has found acceptance. He acknowledges the difficulty of leaving loved ones but also emphasizes the importance of confronting death. He remarked, “We should call it a wicked thief. And yet, it’s pretty good that you pass through the veil of tears one time.”

This candid discussion highlights not only Sasse’s health struggles but also provides insight into the human experience of facing terminal illness. He encourages others to reflect on their priorities and to approach life with a renewed sense of purpose, even in the face of daunting challenges.
