‘Game of Thrones’ Star Michael Patrick Passes Away at 35

Michael Patrick, known for his role in the acclaimed series “Game of Thrones,” has tragically passed away at the age of 35. His death follows a diagnosis of motor neuron disease, which was confirmed in February 2023.

Patrick’s wife, Naomi Sheehan, announced the sad news on Instagram. She revealed he died peacefully while in hospice care in Northern Ireland, surrounded by loved ones. She expressed her heartbreak over his passing, sharing a wedding photo and stating, “Words can’t describe how broken-hearted we are.”

Understanding Motor Neuron Disease

Motor neuron disease (MND) encompasses a range of conditions that affect motor neurons. These neurons are crucial for controlling muscle activities, such as walking, breathing, and speaking. Unfortunately, as highlighted by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, there is currently no cure for most forms of MND.

Life and Career of Michael Patrick

Michael Patrick was not only an actor but also a writer. He was educated at the University of Cambridge, where he studied science and joined the Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe. His impactful career includes:

  • Portraying a wildling rioter in a season six episode of “Game of Thrones.”
  • Co-writing the BBC series “My Left Nut,” which won multiple awards, including three Royal Television Society Awards.
  • Appearing in the drama “This Town,” created by Steven Knight, and films like “The Spectacular” and “Blasts From the Past.”

In his home country, Northern Ireland, he gained recognition for his unique portrayal of Richard III in a wheelchair.

A Legacy of Inspiration

Patrick’s final post on social media revealed a neurologist’s grim prediction about his life expectancy. Nevertheless, his spirit remained resilient. Sheehan remarked on his inspirational life and vibrant personality. “Patrick lived a life as full as any human can live—joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter,” she shared, honoring his legacy.

Sheehan also quoted Irish writer Brendan Behan, a favorite of Patrick’s: “The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.” Through his work and character, Michael Patrick leaves behind a profound impact and a reminder of the essence of life and love.
