Pirates Release Enmanuel Valdez – MLB Trade Updates

The Pittsburgh Pirates have officially sent utility infielder Enmanuel Valdez to Triple-A Indianapolis. The move comes after Valdez cleared waivers, following his designation for assignment. This occurred when the Pirates promoted Konnor Griffin last week.

Background on Enmanuel Valdez

Pittsburgh acquired Valdez from the Boston Red Sox during the 2024-25 offseason. The trade involved sending minor league pitcher Joe Vogatsky to Boston. Valdez started the season as Pittsburgh’s primary first baseman, filling in while Spencer Horwitz recovered from wrist surgery. However, his tenure was marred by a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery.

Performance Overview

  • Games Played: 31
  • Batting Average: .209
  • On-base Percentage: .294
  • Slugging Percentage: .363

Valdez’s injury sidelined his performance, and with his return, the infield dynamics have shifted. Horwitz has regained his position as the primary first baseman. The Pirates also secured Brandon Lowe for second base, with Griffin at shortstop. Valdez’s absence from the infield becomes more prominent, especially with Jared Triolo recovering from a knee injury.

Current Situation

As of now, Valdez has fallen behind Nick Yorke and Nick Gonzales in the depth chart. The 27-year-old boasts a career batting line of .230/.288/.392 over nearly 500 MLB plate appearances. Unfortunately, his spring training performance was subpar, and he has struggled at Triple-A, going 0 for 10 with five strikeouts in four games.

Future Prospects

Valdez does not have enough service time to opt for free agency after this outright assignment. He will stay with the Indianapolis Indians, where he initially began the season, and focus on improving his performance. If the Pirates do not include him back on the 40-man roster, he may qualify for minor league free agency at the season’s end.
