Wembanyama, Castle Sidelined Tonight Against Portland Due to Injuries
The San Antonio Spurs announced at 11:35 a.m. that Victor Wembanyama will not play tonight in Portland. A team spokesperson also said Stephon Castle will not suit up tonight.
Injury details
Wembanyama suffered a rib bruise after a collision with Paul George early in the second quarter. He left the game and did not play in the second half of the Spurs’ win over Philadelphia.
An MRI showed no structural damage, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. The club calls Wembanyama day-to-day and will evaluate him after shootaround.
Castle sidelined and current status
Castle was listed as doubtful with knee soreness. The team confirmed that Castle was sidelined tonight against Portland due to injuries.
Coaches will monitor both players at the pregame practice. Final availability will be announced closer to tipoff.
Who stepped up in Wembanyama’s absence
San Antonio still secured the victory over the Sixers without Wembanyama in the second half. Keldon Johnson and Dylan Harper combined for 30 points off the bench.
Castle produced a 19-point triple-double in that game, a key factor in the Spurs’ 60th win of the season.
Playoff and award implications
Wembanyama must log 20 minutes in one of the remaining three games to qualify for postseason awards. The Spurs have time to choose the proper opportunity.
San Antonio trails the Oklahoma City Thunder by 2.5 games in the Western Conference standings.
