TNT Men’s Final Four Viewership Surges Against 2024; College Crown Overshadows NIT
Cable networks delivered solid numbers for the men’s Final Four. The Saturday doubleheader on TNT, TBS and truTV averaged 14.2 million viewers.
Final Four on Cable vs. Broadcast
That 14.2 million average covered UConn-Illinois and Michigan-Arizona. It trailed last year’s CBS doubleheader, which averaged 15.5 million.
Compared with TNT’s previous Final Four in 2024, cable viewership rose about 11%. Still, it remained below the broadcast peak set in 2025.
Late Window: Michigan vs. Arizona
The late game drew roughly 14.3 million on TBS/TNT/truTV. About 810,000 viewers watched the Fab Five alternate broadcast on truTV.
The alt-cast peaked near 1.5 million during the first half. Once the game became a blowout, second-half viewers fell about 20%.
Early Window: UConn vs. Illinois
The earlier matchup attracted 14.2 million viewers. That game offered no alternate broadcast.
By comparison, Houston-Duke on CBS the previous year reached 16.3 million. It was well above TNT’s 2024 early-window number of 11.4 million.
Context for the Tournament
Heading into the championship, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was running roughly 7% ahead of 2025. Final totals depend on the title-game ratings.
Industry observers noted TNT’s rebound versus 2024 benchmarks. However, broadcast TV still registered higher peak figures in 2025.
College Basketball Crown and NIT Trends
The second-year College Basketball Crown continued to grow. Its title game, featuring West Virginia and Oklahoma, aired in the 5:30 p.m. ET window on Fox.
That game drew about 950,000 viewers. It represented a 16% gain from the inaugural CBC final.
- The full CBC tournament averaged 460,000 viewers on FS1 and Fox.
- That was up 77% from the 260,000 average in 2025, helped by eight teams this year.
The NIT also posted gains. Auburn-Tulsa in prime time reached roughly 700,000 viewers on ESPN2.
That was an increase from last year’s Chattanooga-UC Irvine final, which drew about 508,000.
- The complete NIT averaged about 290,000 viewers across ESPN platforms.
- That marked growth from 212,000 the prior season.
Other Broadcasts
On Sunday, a regular-season Rangers-Capitals game on ESPN drew about 720,000 viewers. It occupied a prime-time slot on the main network.
Overall, the landscape showed cable gains and strong secondary tournaments. Filmogaz.com will track final championship numbers when released.
