Rory McIlroy Discusses ‘Awkward’ Moment at Masters Champions Dinner

Rory McIlroy will host the Masters Champions Dinner at Augusta National on Tuesday evening. The invitation follows his victory at the tournament last year.

Long road to the green jacket

McIlroy entered the Masters 16 times without a win. In 2011 he faltered on Sunday, shot an 80, and finished tied for 15th. He recorded seven top-10s over subsequent appearances but did not claim the title until last year.

In his breakthrough, he defeated Justin Rose in a playoff and celebrated vividly on the 18th green. That triumph unlocked the privileges reserved for champions.

Week at Augusta

This year he arrived on Saturday and played a round with his father on Sunday. He practiced on Monday and Tuesday and addressed reporters Tuesday afternoon. He said the experience feels more relaxed now that he has a Masters title.

Champions Dinner menu

McIlroy designed a dinner menu that mixes favorites with dishes tied to his upbringing. He included nods to the food of Northern Ireland. He admitted to putting off the planning, but he likes what he settled on.

He said the aim was to offer food he enjoys and that would suit the assembled guests. The menu seeks balance between personal memories and broad appeal.

Awkward moment on Magnolia Lane

McIlroy recounted an awkward moment from a previous Tuesday evening at Augusta. He and Justin Rose had gone to the club with two members for dinner and faced uncertainty arriving on Magnolia Lane. Champions were on the balcony having cocktails and he worried about being seen while parking.

He described feeling unsure whether to use the champions parking or to valet. That uneasy scene is one he hopes not to repeat now that he hosts the Masters Champions Dinner.

Overall, McIlroy said hosting felt like a natural next step. He plans to enjoy the perks of being a past champion in the years ahead.
